Evolutionaries • 2003 User Forum Soundset • rev1 Well, after many late nights, many delays, and an all-nighter to finish, it's finally here. Three full banks of fresh new sequences and patches for the Evolver (that's 384!), all created by members of the Evolver online community. This isn't just about quantity, though... there's some stunning quality in this soundset too, and lots of it. A word to the wise: TIME. These sequences and patches take a long time to review. There are a lot of them, and many contain a lot of sonic detail and performance nuances. A quick 5 second preview of each program simply doesn't do them justice. The Evolutionaries archive contains a SysEx file with the sequences and patches, documentation in PDF format, a simple demo mp3, and a bit of Evo artwork for your computer desktop. You can download the archive by using the link below: Evolutionaries 2003 (rev1) (5.9 mb) Here is a direct link to a copy of the demo mp3: The Evolutionary (1.2 mb) It was an immense amount of fun, and a great honor to compile all these sequences and patches, and package them for release. I'm confident you'll like them as much as I do. Thanks to everyone at EX5Tech and the Evolver Yahoo group. Special thanks to the twelve programmers/authors of the Evolutionaries sounds (listed below). Very special thanks to Ravi, Stefan, and of course, Dave Smith. Evolutionaries:
Riccardo Coen (Zinoff) Don Gothard (Don) Gary LaRocco (Mr. Rock) Paul Nagle (Paul) Kevin Paisley (Spectralab1) Robert Shanks (Synthlab) Ravi Sharma (Noision1) John Swana (Swanoid) Stefan Trippler (DocT; DrTrippler; Bluescreen) Mark Vann (Linuxmanvan) Craig Wiper (Mesadude) Tim Ande (Ski) Enjoy!
[edited September 07, 2003 by Ski to update the links to the new "rev1" version, which corrects some of Mr. Rock's sequences, has a tidied up (timing-wise) demo mp3, and improves (i.e. "relaxes") the license wording in the pdf docs] [ September 07, 2003: Message edited by: Ski ] ____________________ Ski www.ex5tech.com

Hi Ski,An entire Evo full of new patches. Now all I have to do is find the time to play with all of them. A phenominal (and most professional) job, Ski! Thanks for all the effort you put into compiling and packaging this. Regards, Gary [ August 31, 2003: Message edited by: mr_rock ] ____________________ E=MC²±3db

Thanks for the kind words, guys. And thanks for your contributions, Gary. I know i've said this before, but it *really* was a *lot* of fun putting this together - mostly, because I was forced to listen/play the sequences/patches several times each. Being forced to spend more time with each really gave me an appreciation for each one of them! It's so easy to blast through a big sound set like this, giving only 2 or 3 seconds to each program, and then coming away relatively unimpressed. You really *do* have to "stop to smell the roses"! That said, I do think that there are a good number of programs in this collection that can seriously grab your attention within 2-3 seconds! To EX owners without an Evolver - You might want to download this release to listen to the simple mp3 demo I included. It's just a "one take" recording from the Evo playing three related sequences back to back, but it rather sounds like something that took multiple takes, or multiple synths, or at least something more than a monosynth. Sayer - Regarding new synths... I was kind of dismissing the whole Alesis Ion thing as "just another cheap synth" until I read that it faithfully models the filters from a number of classics (Moog, ARP, OB, Roland, etc.). Now I'm having to reconsider, because I'm a sucker for great filters (hence the EX, A5K, Motif, and now FS1R)! (Must... resist... the GASeous creature! ) ____________________ Ski www.ex5tech.com

Well Ski,I bought a Ion, next to my Ex5 and Motif. I'm now tempted to look into this Evolver now it gets your support which gave my Ex5 a 'never to be sold' status. Grtz, Jeroen ____________________ http://www.vanzea.com

Thanks guys. I *really* appreciate your comments.I like the three sequences that the mp3 is comprised of, but the mp3 itself is a little rough. I should explain... The mp3 "song" was a single take from a single Evolver playing three different (but obviously related!) sequences back to back. There was no multitracking, no overdubs, no effects... nada. Straight from the Evo into the soundcard and onto the hard drive in one take - and that was the first take! What I don't like about the mp3 is the fact that I switched sequences MANUALLY, the switches were not sequenced by an external sequencer. As a result, the timing of a couple of those switches is rather poor - you can really hear them. Besides my own poor timing, it was about 3 am, and I was dog-tired, so I just let it go. I'm really glad you still enjoyed it!!! That's very high praise, coming from you, David. One other thing about the sequences in the mp3... For you non-Evolver owners, you may have noticed that the Evolver doesn't really have any effects. It only has a couple kinds of distortion, three feedback loops (if you can call that an effect), and three delay lines. It certainly DOESN'T have a phaser/flanger, yet that's what you hear in the mp3 demo. The sequences in the mp3 get the phaser/flanger effect the old fashioned way - by modulating the *times* of the three delay lines with three of the Evo's four LFO's. Fun stuff! You should try it! ____________________ Ski www.ex5tech.com

OK everyone, for the record...n0303 = linuxmanvan (almost looks like an equation from chemistry class!) Phew, these multiple nicknames/screen-names are killing me! Stephan is the worst, going under the aliases DocT, DrTrippler, and Bluescreen. linuxmanvan - You say, "my patches suc arse"? I beg to differ! I love your "Aqua", "Travelling Lead 2", and especially the "Science Bass Lead". Not to mention "The Howling", which is outstanding. That reminds me... it's about time to get working on this years' "Halloween Ghoul" release!

You can just use the link in my original post above, repeated below (w/o the http): www.ex5tech.com/zTemp/Evolutionaries_2003.zip This *might* change in the future, but I'll let you know if it does. All the rest of our downloads at EX5Tech are on our "EXclusive Downloads" page. You have to be a registered EX5Tech member to view that page. We do that to manage the bandwidth a bit. Thanks! ____________________ Ski www.ex5tech.com

IMPORTANT UPDATEThe "Evolutionaries" Soundset has been updated to "rev1". The revision includes several fixes to Mr. Rock's sequences (which lacked Clock Div and BPM data), an improved demo (timing of sequence switches was tidied up), and a much relaxed license. Even if you've already downloaded Evolutionaries, please download the revision. It's well worth the time, especially for the cool sequences from Mr. Rock that now sound "right"! ____________________ Ski www.ex5tech.com

Hi Evolutionaries,This is an excellent sound set: Psicraft would like to make it available from our Vyzor Evolver (our new virtualizing Evolver editor with VST plug-in features) support site, along with the accompanying manual. Would this be possible, SKI? Cheers, Tony ____________________ Tony Antoniou, B.Eng. M.A.Sc. Psicraft Designs, Inc.
