Mick's 16 - SY to EX

It's finally here! (And I bet you didn't even know that you were waiting on it!) "Mick's 16" is a great collection of samples and voices from the SY85 for your EX5, including:

· 16 EX Waves (54 Samples!)
· 16 SY85 Voices
· 16 Bonus Voices

Requirements: A SCSI equipped EX5/7/R with at least 4 mb of DRAM or Flash memory.

You'll find some outstanding and unique sounds in this release, especially the Strings, Choirs, and Pads. I had a great time tweaking Mick's samples and putting together this collection of his work for everyone. I've already admitted to Mick that I didn't get that excited when I first heard "SY85", but you need to try out these sounds, because you're going to be surprised. This one turned out to be a real "keeper"!

Pick up your copy of "Mick's 16" from the EX5Tech Exclusive Downloads page.

Many many thanks to Mick for sharing this with the EX5Tech community! (And thanks again, Mick for being so incredibly patient, waiting on me *so* long to get this finished.)

Man, I was waiting for this like a kid in a toy store! Mucho kudos Mick (again), this is going to be sweet for sure!

Ski brings the scoops, and I've got the tongue waiting even before the ice cream truck comes to a full stop.

Wow! Great.

Thanks Mick for the food for the EX5. I'll bet she will be happy to load them.

Kudos Mick.

E! - I recently got the ceiling bumped up a bit. Plus, another valued EX5Tech member has very graciously offered some space and bandwidth on his site for us to use (it's not being used for "Mick's 16", but we'll probably be using it soon).

OD - NO SCSI?!!! And all this time I've been thinking, "That OD, he's a smart guy!" You simply have NO idea what you're missing. Your EX5 will seem like a new synth. "Micks 16" alone is worth the price of admission. Then there's that little MEL-LABS set (which I can't BELIEVE you haven't heard yet), the Chinese Orchestral thingie, etc. etc. And as if that weren't enough... before long, you'll really be feeling "left out".

Yes, the SCSI is almost as important as the keys themselves. And E! Never heard an SY before? I'm not up on the SY85 myself, but do know it is one of the best AWM synths still, and is one of the forefathers of the EX's design. Yet Yamaha put this dinky skinny LED character display on it only? Must've been a chore for Mick all these years, and the EX must've seemed like a godsend - until he noticed the SY85 had better AWM's

Presets like 'Blue Ice', 'Carbon 60', 'Mudflats', great stuff! (Almost used one in a studio once years ago - went with a Kawai instead. )

I know, I know. I have the MEL-LABS release sitting at home on my PC collecting silicon dust along with several other releases. I've worn out the MEL-LABS Starter Kit, but of course that's not the real thing. I'm just a little budget busted right now.

I've got Flash, but hey, what good is a warehouse if the loading door is too small to fit anything in? The killer is that I'll have to buy a SCSI card for the PC and a Jaz/Zip drive. I'm saving up though and once I do, look out. I'll be EXing the night away.

OD

p.s. In light of my gross negligence for not purchasing the SCSI card sooner, please feel free to withhold any membership priveldges I have received thus far and banishing me to the land of 'stock' boys.

JW, for clarification, I've never played an SY. I've heard about them (mainly here!), but if I've ever heard one on a song or something, I didn't know it was an SY.

Ahhhhh, there's the AWM's I know and love so well. Actually, these are more reminscent of MU100R waves, but I love that too. The Choirs have that distintive 'fairlighty gothic sound'. Love what Mick did with the Scene keys as well. Don't get that on the ol' SY's and MU's.

Good stuff Mick!

Thanks, Mick

I download this last night and there's some nice pads in there.

I'm quite intrigued about what was on the SY series now (I've never played with one before), as those strings sound a little like Mellotron samples.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your work.

Thanks for the comments guys, The sy85 had (Has) some fairly good preset patches especially when you consider it is of 1992? vintage. It had quite a "thick" sound about it, not dissimilar to the EX5,also the keyboard action is the same as on the EX5.

But all credit must go to Ski,s excellent proggraming on the basic samples that i sent him,he proggramed all of the controller/scene assignments etc. Thanks again,Ski!

Hope you find them usefull

Mick.

A little off -topic but relevant to OpenDoerr's message above. Just a reminder that PC SCSI cards may be found at used computer retailers because they pull them out of trade-in systems. I got mine for $10 or so. Also, SCSI zip drives are hard to find new, but used Macintosh retailers usually have a few for sale!

Ooooh when I finally have time to play with my EX5 again I'll have to load up the SY-85 patches. (I still *heart* the piano voices on my SY-85)

SCSI? I don't have one yet on my EX7. Is it really something that is a must? I understand that it hooks up the EX to the Computer but can't you load the files via the 3.5 disk slot in front? Am I missing the point ? fill me in

leethal,

Many, not all, files here and elsewhere for the EX are too big to fit on a floppy.

The SCSI connection can connect a disk to the EX without any computer directly connected to either.

SCSI is highly desirable but not essential depending on what you are looking to load.

Most EX data files S1V, S1Y, S1P, S1R, S1S fit on a single floppy so you won't have trouble with these.

The problem comes with S1A and S1M files that have a collection of custom sounds and waves which may make the files too big to fit on a floppy disk.

If you haven't expanded the EX memory above the 1MB custom RAM it comes with then you can live without SCSI as you have nowhere to load these large custom waves.

Having said that a SCSI mass storage drive is a good way of storing all your EX files in one place. Whilst the EX SCSI is not a terribly fast implementation, it is faster than loading files by floppy.

Now then, some sound sets out there use custom samples that need to be loaded in otherwise the voices will not sound as they should (including not sounding at all!) and you will not be able to enjoy those without SCSI and more RAM. E.g. our Mel-labs Mellotron project has a 16MB custom wave file full of Mellotron samples topped and tailed by Ski.

For an idea of how custom waves can expand the EX beyond the stock waves, get the Halloween Ghoul 3 download. This was designed by Ski to fit into a stock EX (and thus will fit on a floppy disk).

On this you'll find some spooky voices in bank C that utilise custom samples for the Mellotron choirs.

BTW: Just because a zip archive is larger than 1.44MB, don't assume it's not worth downloading as quite often the documentations and graphics than some people supply to complete their package will naturally increase the size of the file.

HTH.

I downloaded the Halloween sound set THEY ARE SO COOL!! I used some sounds at my gig this week and they turned a few heads also the ski boat sound set is way cool, Hmmm... looks like I'll have to look into upgrading the Blue Mule, I didn't realize I could even change the FDD to a zip drive till about an hour ago This is so cool I've learned so much in just a few days thanks again

Leethal,

Although, as you say, it is possible to replace the FDD with a zip drive, internal SCSI zips are a little hard to find these days, and most people go for an external drive as it's the path of least resistance and it's also quite easy to share with your computer (assuming you have a SCSI interface in your computer as well).

I replaced my FDD a few years ago as it went faulty and you wouldn't believe the amount I had to disassemble to get to it! I was most amazed when it all came back together with no spare screws!

Having said that, if you want an internal zip drive then it can be done.

Ski and others are huge fans of Jazz drives as they can store a lot more than zips, so they're well worth looking out for as well.

I'm a proud fan of 100 and 250MB Zips, and the EX SCSI option is a definate must then.
Floppy's good for backing up SONG and Pattern ideas, and maybe a Synth All file?
But Zip/Jaz if you plan on sampling and/or getting downloads and payware for the EX in future. Word of caution - as good as a 750MB Zip sounds, it's only USB now. As Derek points out, we're all getting delegated to E-Bay and second hand pages now.

Nothing shameful in 100MB Zip drive for starters.
