Latest Tip by Erik J. Martin

For instant double, half, or triplet feels dig into the PFX tab and check out the "UNIT" parameter. Make sure that the FxThru is enabled on the pattern page. Instant fresh air for sequencing!

SCSI

The optional ASIB1 adds SCSI to the EX5.

  • Yamaha UK told me that their versions come with SCSI, but the US models do not.
  • The ASIB1 allows internal SCSI connections.
  • The external port is a 50 pin low density SCSI 2 connector.
  • The EX5 SCSI transfer is SLOW! It took over 6 minutes to load a 10MB sample!
  • It is possible to replace the internal floppy with and internal ZIP or JAZ (see below).
Zip Inside!!! ASIB1

Above is an EX5 with an internal SCSI ZIP Drive instead of a floppy.

  • This procedure might invalidate your warranty or cause damage to the EX5 - check with Yamaha if you have questions!

  • Purchase a SCSI internal ZIP drive and an internal 36 inch 50 pin SCSI cable.
  • Install the ASIB1 as shown in the manual.
  • Take off the bottom panel - there are many screws. Look carefully so that you only remove the necessary ones. With the panel off, you can access the floppy drive.
  • To remove the floppy, unconnect the power and FDD cable.
  • Then unscrew the screws that hold the floppy brackets in the EX5.
  • Once the brackets are out, remove the floppy.
  • Put the ZIP drive in the brackets.
  • Attach the brackets back to the EX5.
  • Carefully remove the soft foam from the floppy drive and put it on the ZIP drive.
  • Use the floppy drive's power cable for the ZIP.
  • Use the long SCSI cable you bought to run the path of the old FDD cable, but connect it to the extra internal SCSI connector.
  • Close it back up - you're now up and running!

The EX5 does not provide a power supply for internal hard drives. The ZIP and JAZ may be installed by using the floppy power supply.

RAM

The EX5 comes with 1MB RAM allows for up to 64 additional MB to be installed.

  • RAM is displayed as WORDS, not Megabytes. This means that it may look as if half the normal amount is installed.
  • Check the amount of sample time available to insure the unit is recognizing the full amount. If you install 32MB, you should have around 190 seconds of stereo sampling available.
  • Not all RAM will work - check your Owner's Manual for specs on Yamaha approved RAM.

Flash RAM

The EX5 has an additional 2 simms slots for Flash Ram.

  • Flash RAM retains samples when when unit is turned off and on.
  • The EX Series EXFL-1 8MB kit, the newer EXFL-2 16MB kit (approximately $200) can be ordered directly from Yamaha if still in stock. Some mail order vendors may also stock the Flash kits.
